I recently got a Western Digital 1 TB My Book for backing up my desktop and laptop. I have reformatted it from the default FAT32 to NTFS.

I have no problem transferring files to and from it, but when it is plugged into any USB port in the back of my HP desktop, the startup freezes on the screen where you can hit F1 for Setup or F10 for Recovery. I read around some and everybody says to make sure to change the boot order, however, since my desktop actually freezes on that screen, I can't go to Setup to change the order. If I unplug the My Book and restart, I have no problems booting to Windows or entering Setup (but obviously there is no point to this when the My Book isn't plugged in since I can't select it in the boot order). Any ideas on how I can change the boot order when the My Book is plugged in? Or is this even the problem?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. My browser caused a flood of traffic, sio my IP address was banned. Hope to fix it soon. Will get back to posting as soon as Im able. I don't see how these additions would cause my problem though. I was advised to check if there is a USB Boot in the Bios and to turn it off.

I didn't see anything like that for this PC. Any other thoughts?

If there is any other info that would be helpful, please let me know and I'll do my best to get it on here. I suspect the HP computer BIOS is set to boot from USB which you don't want. The errors you mention occur well after booting. You need to get into BIOS. Read HP instructions to find out how to get into BIOS. HP/Compaq computers require pressing F10, most other computers require F2.

Once you get there, navigate all the menus with the cursor till you hit boot order and make sure to set it to your CD rom first, then the harddrive, then, if you really want to boot from USB, to USB. Also if your ocmputer is anything like the Compaqs, you only have a few seconds to respond as it's booting, so watch the screen carefully or you'll miss the critical point and the BIOS entry. Edit: one other way to enter BIOS on HP computers is CTRL+ALT+ESC keys as the machine is starting up. Edited by tos226, 30 December 2007 - 08:40 PM. That's what I figured. The problem I have is that when the My Book is plugged in, I can't enter the BIOS.

The PC freezes at the HP splash screen where you can hit F1 for Setup or F10 for Recovery. I unplugged the My Book and went back into the BIOS without a problem, and the My Book doesn't appear in the list for the Boot Order, so it does me no good. Also, I changed one of the options for the boot so it shows the 'status' or whatever and I took a picture of where it freezes. (see the attached pic) I also tried turning off the Plug & Play option in the BIOS and that didn't help.

Any other ideas? Thanks for everyone's help so far.

Well, if it's locking up on detection, then it's not working right. I'd suggest returning the drive to W-D for a replacement. Western Digital has been very good to me when it comes to warranty service on my 500 gB My Book.

A visit to their website should allow you to request an RMA and detailed instructions on how to do it. Additionally, if you've got data on the current drive, you can request that they send you the new drive first (so you can save the data). They'll do this if you give them a credit card number to hold - then will delete the card number (and not charge you) when you return the old drive.

My MyBook 3T Drive, less than 1 yr old, only used for Time Machine backups, refuses to power up now. Have no idea why; I haven't even backedup that many times so it's got plenty of space. I've tried different outlets, also subbed in the power cable from my older MyBook Studio, all to no avail!

This is especially maddening since I have many externals, one from 2006 even, that I no longer use but still powers up! Makes me think newer is less reliable -!! This really blows! So if I tear it down, what am I looking for?

Is there a way to access it w/o a power source? Fyi, it's barely 1 yr old - bought it in Aug 2016.update. Talked to WD on the phone to verify they would replace the drive but not remove the data or send the old drive back.

I said I didn't care about the warranty, just the data, so he said just to remove the drive and buy a SATA cable to reconnect and obtain the data that way. WD also said take the bare-bones drive in and show to a tek to buy the propert SATA. I went to MicroCenter and the clerk in the Build Your Own dept showed me a case with a power cable and a new power board that would just plug into my hard drive (once I removed my power board) and that should do me. I just now finished - took all of 10 mins or less.

Just ran a diagnostic on the hard drive as yeah, I was concerned. Everything is fine. Apparently the power board (I don't know what the tek term is but it's the board where the power cord would connect) was bad in the old one. Very happy camper now!!
